The Gudenå Trail stage 3 - Rask Mølle – Brestenbro

Stage 3 of the Gudenå Trail is an 11-kilometre hike through peaceful farmland. This stage acts as a link between the flat fen landscape of stage 2 and the hilly, forested southern part of the Søhøjlandet lake district.

Hiking along the Gudenå River

This stage of the Gudenå Trail begins in the village of Rask Mølle and ends at Gudenå Camping in Brestenbro. While stages 1 and 2 each pass through distinctive natural landscapes, stage 3 offers more variety, combining village life, open countryside and woodland.

About the route

The first part of the route takes you through Rask Mølle and onwards into Rask Forest, passing the manor house Rask. From here, the landscape opens up and you continue through protected farmland, interspersed with small woods and plantations. Most of this stage follows country roads—primarily asphalt, with a few gravel sections. Only a small part of the route is dedicated exclusively to pedestrians, but the roads are generally quiet with limited traffic. This is one of the more sparsely populated stretches along the Gudenå River, something you will notice as you walk along the small country roads. If you are heading north, you will observe how the landscape gradually becomes more undulating and forested.

There is no risk of flooding on this stage, so there is no need to bring waterproof boots. This is because the route does not follow the banks of the Gudenå River on this section.

As there is a considerable amount of asphalt, this is one of the more wheelchair- and pushchair-friendly stages of the Gudenå Trail. Only around Rask Forest is the terrain more difficult, particularly at the transition between the town and the forest.

Nature lovers may wish to extend their walk with a signposted circular route in Rask Forest. In the forest, you will also find a side route from the Gudenå Trail, marked with yellow arrows, leading to the ruins of Boringholm Castle.

Transport and accommodation

There are bus connections to Horsens from both Rask Mølle and Brestenbro. From Rask Mølle, you can take bus 114 between Horsens and Tørring, and from Brestenbro, bus 110 runs between Silkeborg and Horsens. There may be limited departures at certain times—especially during weekends and holidays—so it is advisable to check Rejseplanen in advance. It is also possible to book a flex trip to a destination of your choice where no bus service is available, at a reasonable price via Rejseplanen.

During the summer period, the free shuttle bus, Modstrømsbussen, operates along this stretch of the Gudenå River. To use Modstrømsbussen on this stage, you need to board the bus at the end point of the stage, Gudenå Camping, at 17:03, and travel to Aale Teltplads, located a few kilometres from Rask Mølle. From there, you can enjoy a pleasant walk through Rask Forest back to the town.

There are no shopping facilities along the route. It is therefore a good idea to stock up at the local supermarket in Rask Mølle, which is located along the route.

Gudenå Camping offers a café, a mini golf course and accommodation in cabins, rooms or your own tent.

There are also a few campsites close to the route along the banks of the Gudenå River—Aale Teltplads, Åstedbro Teltplads, as well as a shelter site in Nim near the end of the stage.
