The main shopping street in Horsens is called Søndergade. The street is around 400 metres long and is especially known for being Denmark’s widest pedestrian street.
Søndergade offers plenty of space for outdoor cafés, seating areas, small pavilions and play equipment, creating a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in the heart of the city.
Several smaller pedestrian streets branch off from Søndergade. On the northern side, you will find the Latin Quarter, known for its restaurants, cafés and independent shops. South of Søndergade, charming cobbled streets and half-timbered houses reflect Horsens’ long history as a market town.
At the end of Søndergade lies the town square, Torvet, which has been the historic heart of Horsens for centuries.

Yes, Horsens is easy to reach by public transport. The train station and transport terminal are located just 300 metres from the pedestrian streets in the city centre.
There are direct train connections to Horsens from Copenhagen, Hamburg, Esbjerg, Aarhus and Aalborg, making the city easy to visit from across Denmark and northern Germany.

Is Horsens an old city?
Yes, Horsens is one of Denmark’s oldest cities, with a history dating back to the Viking Age in the 10th century. The area has been inhabited for around 11,000 years, but the first evidence of settlement in what is now Horsens comes from the Viking period.
By the 13th century, Horsens had become one of Denmark’s largest cities and regularly welcomed the Danish king.
Today, the city’s history is still visible throughout Horsens. Along Søndergade, you can see elegant merchant houses built by wealthy traders, reflecting Horsens’ long tradition as an important trading town where people travelled from near and far to buy and sell goods.
Later, Horsens developed into a successful industrial city, and this chapter of the city’s story can still be experienced today — especially at the Industrial Museum.
