Child-friendly nature experiences in Kystlandet

In the Horsens area, you can pick up a free booklet packed with fun nature activities for children, created by Horsens Municipality. The booklet, ‘Gummirøjserne kalder’ (The Wellies Are Calling), encourages families to put down the tablet for a while and head outdoors. Take on fun challenges such as finding woodlice or edible plants, climbing the hills of the area or cooking over a campfire.

The booklet is available at several locations, including Horsens Library and the tourist information point at FÆNGSLET.

With the Natureventyr app (Nature tales), you can combine outdoor experiences with digital adventures linked to specific locations. Natureventyr makes it easy to motivate children to get outdoors, as enchanting stories guide you through some of the area’s beautiful natural surroundings. For example, set off on an adventure at Nørrestrand, Ring Lake or Ulvedalen.

Kystlandet has created seven child-friendly treasure hunts in the region’s towns and islands. Print out or pick up a treasure map, follow the route and answer questions about what you see along the way – then finish by collecting a gold medal as proof (and a souvenir) of your visit. You can go treasure hunting in Horsens, Odder, Juelsminde and Brædstrup, as well as on the islands of Endelave, Tunø and Hjarnø.

At the harbours around the Kystlandet region, children can get right up close to life beneath the surface of the sea. With a piece of string, a peg and a little bait, you can catch crabs and study them up close. Try the crab racing arena at Juelsminde Harbour, for example, where the crabs can race to see which one makes it back into the water first. Remember to handle them gently and always release them afterwards. You will also find crabbing jetties at the harbours in Norsminde, Snaptun, Hou, Horsens, Hjarnø and Tunø.

Bring your binoculars and see how many different birds you can spot. Head to Uldum Kær, for example, where paths and wooden boardwalks lead you through the vast wetland to birdwatching towers overlooking the marsh. Along the way, you might spot birds of prey, ducks, geese or even storks. From the birdwatching tower at the Nørrestrand wildlife reserve near Horsens, you can enjoy views across the lake and meadows while keeping an eye out for the area’s rich birdlife.

Endelave is known as the island of rabbits. Thousands of wild rabbits live here, and on a trip to the island, you can set off in search of these cute, furry locals.
