Accessible experiences in Kystlandet
In Kystlandet, you will find many experiences that are accessible for wheelchair users, people with limited mobility, and other physical disabilities. We provide guides to attractions where your specific needs are taken into consideration.
Museums
There are many exciting museums in the Eastern Jutland region, but not all of them are equally easy to navigate with physical disabilities. Here is a list of interesting museums where you can get around with a wheelchair.
The Prison Museum
This exciting museum is located in a building from 1853 where physical accessibility was not a top priority. However, ramps, elevators, etc. have been installed in the museum, making it possible to move around the exhibition areas on different levels. Some of the ramps can be very steep and may be challenging to navigate independently. The staff is more than willing to assist if needed. In some areas, the corridors may be narrow, but there is enough space for wheelchairs to pass through. Visitors with mobility issues should be aware that the museum is quite large and requires a fair amount of walking.
Horsens Art Museum
The museum is wheelchair accessible, with elevators to all floors for those with mobility difficulties. There are signs for handicap parking and wheelchair access from the parking lot to the art museum. However, the wheelchair ramp at the entrance of the museum does not have a handrail, so those with mobility difficulties only have the wall for support. In the museum's café area, there is space for wheelchairs, and for those in need of assisted help, free "companion tickets" are available for people with proper documentation.
The Industrial Museum
Approximately 60% of the museum is wheelchair accessible. There is a ramp and a wide entrance, providing wheelchair access to most of the museum through the main exhibition hall. In the main building of the museum, there is access to most exhibitions on one level. The first floor is accessible by elevator, but the shopping street on the first floor can only be accessed via stairs. In the Textile Factory exhibition, there is wheelchair access and a handicap toilet.
Odder Museum
Odder Museum has three exhibition buildings. In the museum's newest exhibition building, there is a ramp installed. There are wide doors and an accessible toilet. The parking lot has wheelchair-friendly pavement, allowing wheelchair users to access the exhibition building from the parking lot.
In the water and steam mill, there is access via a wide gate to the ground floor of the mill. From the mill's ground floor, wheelchair users can enter the museum's café and shop.
Unfortunately, the old farmhouse is not accessible for wheelchair users and is challenging to access for individuals with mobility difficulties.
Juelsminde Harbour Museum
The museum has a wide entrance without stairs, providing easy access for wheelchair users and individuals with mobility difficulties. Inside the museum, there is wheelchair access to all exhibitions. There is also access to a toilet without steps.
However, the museum's ship simulator is not accessible for wheelchair users, as there are stairs leading up to it.
Accessible Family Attractions
Everyone should be able to have fun - regardless of age and physical abilities. Here you will find great accessible attractions for both young and old.
Vandhalla Accessible Swimming Center
Vandhalla in Hou is Denmark's most accessible swimming center. The facility is designed to provide people with mobility impairments and wheelchair users with the opportunity to access the swimming pool. Vandhalla has the only water slide in the country that is accessible for people with disabilities, as well as wheelchair access to all pools.
Kuglen & Keglen Together Bowling
Kuglen & Keglen is accessible with ramps at the entrance, and all activities are on one single level. There is handicap parking available at the entrance. There are many activities in which wheelchair users and individuals with mobility impairments can participate, including bowling. There are also seating options for people with physical disabilities and accessible toilets in the complex. The range of activities is extensive, so please contact Kuglen & Keglen to inquire about the possibilities that cater to your specific needs.
Horsens Play Centre
At Horsens Legeland (indoor play centre), you can give your children or grandchildren a fantastic day, even if you have a physical disability. There is accessible parking with space for four cars, and there is a ramp at the entrance. Horsens Legeland is located on a single level, and there is enough space to maneuver with a wheelchair inside the premises. There is an accessible toilet in the building. Most of the activities in the playland are not accessible for wheelchair users, as they involve crawling, jumping, and similar activities. However, there are arcade games that can be operated from a wheelchair.
GIVSKUD ZOO ZOOTOPIA
Wheelchairs can be booked prior to your visit. There are gravel paths that wheelchair users can use, although there are some small inclines along the route. Guests with companion cards (documentation of assisted help) have the opportunity to bring one companion for free. The park's safari bus is equipped with a hearing loop (Telecoil). The bus does not have a lift, so it can only accommodate wheelchair users who are able to board on their own or with assistance from a companion. You can find more information about accessibility at GIVSKUD ZOO on the park's website.
Cultural Experiences
The Coastal Land offers a wide range of cultural experiences that can be enjoyed without any difficulties by people with physical disabilities, from cinemas to concert venues.
Horsens Ny Teater (Theater)
There is a large wheelchair ramp at the theater entrance, but wheelchair users and individuals with mobility impairments can also access the theater via an elevator at the staff entrance, which can be used by contacting the staff. For most shows, wheelchair spaces and spaces for companions are reserved. Companions with companion cards also have free admission, subject to availability of companion seats. There are accessible toilets and handrails by the stairs, and in the Main Hall, a hearing loop (Telecoil) is installed to ensure a good experience for individuals with hearing aids.
Biffen Odder (cinema)
Biffen has won Odder Municipality's accessibility award for their efforts to improve accessibility. The cinema is on one level with wide doors, making it easy to get around. There are special seating options for people with disabilities. Additionally, free companion tickets are available for individuals with companion cards. There are also accessible parking available near the cinema at the public parking lots in the city center.
Culture Station Horsens
Kulturstationen offers family activities that everyone can participate in. There is access via a ramp from the rear entrance on Kildegade. There is a ramp on one section of the path, allowing wheelchair users to access the facility. Admission to events is free, so companions can accompany visitors. The nearest parking is on Kildegade, but there is time-limited parking available. Wheelchair users can also park in the courtyard, but they would need to go to Kildegade to access the rear entrance.
Horsens Public Library
Horsens Public Library, (branch: Tobaksgården), has wide entrances and accessibility throughout the building via an elevator. There are handrails by the stairs, and ample space between the shelves to accommodate wheelchair users and those with mobility challenges. In addition, there are designated parking spaces for people with disabilities and accessible bathrooms.
