The Coastal Trail in Hou

Put on your hiking boots and set off on this 10-kilometre-long hiking trail from the port of Hou. This scenic walk takes you along the Odder Coast to Hølken Beach and back through the charming town of Hou.

Beautiful hike along the coast

This circular route around the maritime ferry town and harbour of Hou reveals some of the area’s finest features: a stunning coastline, a cosy harbour atmosphere, and fascinating local history. The route is well signposted, making it easy to follow throughout your walk.

The trail begins in Hou and follows the coast north past Hou Beach to Hølken Beach. At Hølken, you can take a well-earned break at the caravan park Hygge Strand Camping and enjoy an ice cream or a refreshing drink. You can also take a dip from the bathing jetty on the sandy beach.

The route back to Hou leads inland, guiding you through scenic nature and past local sights in the town, the harbour and the town centre.

Get to know the local history

The history of Hou is full of charm and local legends. Along the trail, you can scan QR codes and listen to captivating stories – such as that of Hou’s very first fisherman, the tale of the Hou thorn, the ancient mounds of Bjørnkær, and the historic Gersdorffslund Manor.

Interesting detours

Just west of Hou, you will find the medieval rampart of Bjørnkær – one of the largest and best-preserved ramparts in East Jutland. South of the rampart lies Ravnskoven Forest, a perfect detour if you wish to combine your walk with a peaceful nature experience.

You can also extend your hike by continuing north along the coast from Hølken. Approximately five kilometres further, you will reach the popular seaside resort of Saksild.

Spending the night along the Coastal Trail

There are several overnight options along the trail. At Hou Søsportcenter, you can stay in accessible holiday homes, located near an 850-metre stretch of the trail with handicap-friendly paving. Not far away, Hou Strandcamping offers tent camping if you are not travelling with a caravan. In Hølken, you can stay in charming wooden cabins at Hygge Strand Camping or enjoy a night outdoors for free at the popular shelter and barbecue hut.
