The Nature Trail Horsens-Silkeborg
Experience beautiful nature and captivating cultural history on one of Denmark’s finest hiking and cycling routes. Walk, cycle, or even ride on horseback along the historic railway trail through the rolling hills of Bakkelandet and the picturesque Danish Lakelands between Horsens and Silkeborg.
Denmark’s most scenic railway
The Nature Trail Horsens-Silkeborg follows the former railway line known as Bryrupbanen. In the golden age of railways, this route was celebrated as the most scenic railway stretch in Denmark. The line was closed in 1968 and has since been surfaced, much to the delight of nature enthusiasts.
Today, the trail is a popular hiking and cycling route that winds through breathtaking natural landscapes. It runs alongside the Gudenå River, which it crosses at several points. You will pass through Bakkelandet, just north of Horsens, home to some of Denmark’s highest hills, deep forests, and tranquil lakes.
The 61-kilometre-long trail is ideal for relaxed cycling trips, as it rarely intersects with busy roads. As a former railway line, the path is predominantly flat, making it suitable for all levels.
Experience the railway history along the route
Along the route between Horsens and Silkeborg, you will encounter several historical landmarks that bring the old railway days to life. You will pass former train stations where it is easy to imagine the hustle and bustle of passengers and railway workers loading goods and livestock.
A five-kilometre section of the original tracks remains intact, and here you can take a nostalgic ride on the vintage train at the Bryrup–Vrads Vintage Railway.
The Uncovered Bridge
The biggest attraction en route is an old railway bridge. The Uncovered Bridge was the largest of its kind in Denmark when it was built and has a unique history. For 85 years it was hidden and (almost) forgotten in a dam until it was found, dug free and restored to its former glory. Today it is a big attraction with 100.000 visitors per year. At the bridge you can admire the lovely nature and enjoy a meal at the bank of the purling river Gudenå.
Take a break in cosy Brædstrup
If 61 kilometres is a little too much for you, then you might want to spend the night in the town Brædstrup. The cosy town is located on the halfway in Bakkelandet. There are options for accommodation, good eateries and exciting stores and speciality shops.
If you prefer sleeping under the blue sky, then there are several shelters and campsites on the route. They are all well-kept and can be used by anyone in need of a rest.
At the outdoor accommodation site Holmely, you can try sleeping in a tree top shelter, a glamping tent or inside in a room.
