Bygholm Lake Mountain Bike Trail
Bygholm Lake and Åbjergskoven Forest is the setting of one of the region’s best MTB trails. The 12-kilometre-long trail through beautiful nature offers challenges for beginners as well as pros.
Trail for beginners and experts near the city centre
For many years, Bygholm Lake has been the most popular destination for outdoor excursions and exercise in nature for the residents of Horsens. Here, you’ll encounter dog walkers, runners, and joggers – and for good reason: the nature here is something special.
The area’s mountain bike (MTB) trail has recently been expanded and improved, increasing its entertainment value. The trail is a good 12 kilometres long and circles the lake. It consists of a blue main trail that is very beginner-friendly, with only a few elevation changes. In addition, there is a blue loop and several red loops that are more technical.
On the trail
There are several parking lots around the lake where you can start your ride. Please note that traffic on the trail is one-way – you must ride counterclockwise.
A popular starting point is the public parking lot on Åbjergskovvej, near Schüttesvej. From here, you head into the deep part of Åbjergskoven Forest on the south side of the lake. This section takes you through beautiful, varied nature on a natural surface. It is not very demanding or hilly.
The north side of the lake is hillier and offers more of a challenge. You’ll pass a technical trail, and from there, you can choose to ride a loop in a closed gravel pit. The gravel pit has its own well-made trail with a blue main route and a red loop.
The final stretch on the north side of the lake features some fun, flowing sections with great speed.
Perfect for beginners
This trail is a great place to bring family or friends with no prior experience or knowledge of the sport. The route is very beginner-friendly – everyone can ride the blue main trail. It’s also a great spot for children to try mountain biking for the first time.
That doesn’t mean the trail is boring – far from it. Despite the relatively low elevation, you'll still need to put in some effort to keep up your momentum. And on the red loops, there are plenty of opportunities to challenge yourself and pick up speed – especially in the gravel pit.
