Hiking trails on Hjarnø

The charming island of Hjarnø is big enough to offer a diverse range of hiking experiences but small enough for you to walk around the island easily. On Hjarnø, there are marked hiking trails that guide you around the island in a way that allows you to experience the coastline, nature, and the island's attractions.

On foot in the East Jutland Archipelago

Hjarnø is a hidden gem in Horsens Fjord, located just off the coast. With frequent ferry departures throughout the day, getting to and from the island is quick and easy. Hjarnø offers a little bit of everything – from cosy eateries and charming shops to galleries, scenic beaches, historical sites, abundant wildlife, and, most importantly, friendly islanders. Clearly signposted hiking trails make it easy to explore much of the island on foot. The marked routes span a total of 7.4 kilometres and form a network of paths rather than a simple A-to-B trail. The route takes you along Hjarnø’s southern coast and through the island’s main road, passing by cafés, shops, and local attractions.

Experiences along the way

Your walk begins at Hjarnø’s ferry harbour, where you arrive via the Hjarnø Ferry. You may also spot the small bicycle ferry that crosses between Hjarnø and its neighbouring island, Alrø. From here, we recommend heading east towards Denmark’s second-smallest church – a charming spot well worth a visit. Continuing along the southern side of the island, the trail follows the coastline. Once you reach the church, turn down towards the shore and walk along Hjarnø Odde, where you will enjoy views of the water on both sides. From Hougård Beach, the trail turns inland, leading you back along Hovedvejen – the island’s main road – which stretches all the way to the western coast. On the way, you will pass the local campsite, which includes a small shop, vegetable stalls, and the coffee hatch at Det Grafiske Magasin café. About halfway along, you will also find a spacious rest area with a covered picnic shelter.

The full loop around the island is 5.5 kilometres. If you prefer a shorter walk, you can take a shortcut by turning off Hovedvejen onto either Østre or Vestre Kirkevej and heading straight towards the harbour. These paths are also clearly marked. Altogether, there are 7 kilometres of waymarked trails on Hjarnø.

Please note: We advise against walking along the island’s northern coast, as it is home to several bird colonies during the breeding season, and the birds can become highly protective.

You can follow the route on your smartphone using this digital map.
