The Coastal Trail Snaptun - Juelsminde

Prepare for a scenic and varied hiking adventure between the charming harbour towns of Snaptun and Juelsminde – right by the coast. This picturesque route leads you through deep forests, expansive sandy beaches, idyllic villages, and elegant manor parks, before reaching delightful Juelsminde.

One of the Denmark’s most varied hiking trails

The trail between Snaptun and Juelsminde spans 22 kilometres and showcases the quintessential Danish landscape. Wander past grand manor houses, stroll between vibrant yellow rapeseed fields, and climb hilly forest paths. The route also includes long stretches along wide, sandy beaches.

We recommend completing the hike in one go, if the weather and your energy levels allow, but it is also easy to divide into stages. There are convenient parking areas at Tønballe Nature Centre, Pøt Strandby, As Vig, Birkholm, Palsgaard, and Sandbjerg Vig Bay. Information boards are placed along the trail, and at the trailheads in both Juelsminde and Snaptun, you can pick up a brochure about the Coastal Trail Snaptun-Juelsminde.

Highlights of the hike

1: The small ferry port Snaptun

This quaint marina exudes maritime charm. At the harbour, you will find eateries and plenty of opportunities to enjoy an ice cream in the sun. Ferries depart daily for the islands of Hjarnø and Endelave. There is a bus stop and a large car park at the harbour. The trail begins at the southern end of the port.

2: The redoubts at Horsens Fjord

To defend the town of Horsens from Swedish invasions, redoubts were constructed several times along Horsens Fjord. Near Snaptun, you can see “Little Battery” and “Big Battery”. Along the trail, you will also pass the “Swedish Redoubt” in Tønballe Forest, where two cannons stand on a hilltop.

3: Jensgaard Manor

South of Tønballe Forest lies the impressive Jensgaard Manor, nestled in peaceful countryside. The estate dates back to around 1300, when it was known as Inæs and is believed to have belonged to Øm Monastery.

4: As Vig

After passing through the holiday home area of Pøt Strandby and the serene Sønderby Forest, you reach As Vig. This beautiful bay is a popular holiday destination, known for its wide sandy beach. The entire section through As Vig follows the shoreline. On the way, you will see the whitewashed As Church, gracefully positioned on a hill overlooking the water.
NB: In the southernmost part of As Vig, it may be difficult to walk along the beach at high tide.

5: The mounds of Palsgaard

Leaving As Vig Beach and heading inland, you will encounter the mounds from the predecessor of today’s Palsgaard Castle. These are located in an artificial lake and consist of two earth banks. The remains of the old Palsgaard date from around 1275–1300.

6: Palsgaard Castle Park

After strolling along an old manor avenue, you will reach Palsgaard Castle Park. The trail passes close to the castle, with its beautifully maintained park and historic buildings, but we highly recommend a short detour for a walk through the picturesque park.

The trail around the park offers views of the majestic main building, which overlooks the bay and the town of Juelsminde. You will also find sculptures, vibrant perennial flowerbeds, towering rhododendrons, and a variety of rare tree species.

7: Sandbjerg Vig

Continuing through woodland, the trail brings you south of Palsgaard to Sandbjerg Vig Bay, another lovely spot with a sandy beach. The initial section along the coast follows an elevated grassy path, and the final kilometres towards Juelsminde are along the beach. Near Juelsminde, you will find a campsite and an ice cream kiosk. Throughout, you will enjoy lovely views of the town and its harbour.

8: Juelsminde

The final stretch of the trail takes you past charming seaside houses and ends at the bustling harbour.

Today, Juelsminde is a vibrant coastal and holiday town with lively harbour life and the popular Great Beach, which draws many summer visitors. Enjoy the laid-back atmosphere, treat yourself to a fresh fish dish, or simply relax with an ice cream in the sunshine. There are plenty of opportunities to embrace the holiday spirit in Juelsminde.

From Juelsminde, buses run to Horsens and Vejle, and free parking is available throughout the town.
