Sønderby Beach

Nestled in As Vig Bay on the east coast of Jutland, this beach sits by the holiday home area of Sønderby. The beach offers excellent bathing water but limited facilities. It is rarely crowded, making it a peaceful alternative to the bay’s more popular beaches.

Lovely beach on the Juelsminde Peninsula

Set in the picturesque As Vig Bay on the Juelsminde Peninsula, Sønderby Beach is a quiet and tranquil spot in the seaside cottage area of Sønderby. Here, you can enjoy clean bathing water and stunning views across the bay and the peninsula of As Hoved. With few visitors, this beach offers a peaceful atmosphere and a more secluded experience than the area’s busier shores. Facilities are minimal, but the natural beauty and tranquillity more than make up for it.

Part of a string of beautiful beaches

As Vig is famous for its long, continuous sandy beaches stretching along the Kattegat coast – perfect for swimming and seaside walks. Sønderby Beach is the northernmost in the bay and, like the others, features a sandy seabed with only a few stones. The beach is about 5–10 metres wide and backed by a small green area with grass and picnic benches. There are no public toilets or commercial services like kiosks, but the beach does offer a bathing jetty (in the summer season), a lifebuoy, and waste bins.

Clean water and peaceful surroundings

Although Sønderby Beach does not have a Blue Flag, the water quality is regularly tested and rated as excellent – the highest official classification. In the rare event that the water is unsuitable for bathing, clear signage will be in place on site.

The beach is located at the end of Niels Rasmussens Vej. Please note that there is no public parking – only private spaces available nearby.

Hiking along the bay

Sønderby Beach forms part of the scenic hiking trail The Coastal Trail Snaptun–Juelsminde, which links the two harbour towns and follows the shoreline along the entire As Vig Bay. The full trail is 22.5 km long, but you do not need to walk the whole route to enjoy the area.

The beach is ideal for shorter walks, with its rolling coastal landscape offering beautiful views and a calm, relaxing vibe. Head about 1.5 km south and you will reach As Vig Beach. From there, you can turn inland to find the nearest grocery shop – roughly 2 km from Sønderby. If you continue further south, you will arrive at As Hoved – a wooded and scenic peninsula with a truly unique landscape.

Just 300 metres south of Sønderby Beach, you will find a small forest area, perfect for peaceful strolls. Right behind the forest lies the holiday home area of Pøt Strandby.
